# Platform Research — What Actually Works

> TikTok hook data, AI-content rules, cannabis policy limits, and comedy structure — the researched constraints that shape every script in this library.

## Why This Page Exists

Everything in the Script Room was written on judgment. This page is the researched version: what the platform actually rewards, what it actually penalizes, and what it will actually ban you for.

Three findings changed the slate. They are at the top because they matter more than the rest.

<Warning>
  **Finding 1 has been superseded twice — see [Compliance](/social/compliance) for the primary-sourced version.** The current guidelines contain an explicit "Fiction or art" allowance that the 2024 version did not, and animated cannabis comedy is demonstrably reaching the For You feed. Most cannabis-marketing blogs still quote the superseded 2024 text.

  Earlier revision, retained for the record — see the [Landscape](/social/landscape): The original version of this page said flatly that cannabis content is banned. That was drawn from secondary marketing blogs rather than primary policy text, and it was too absolute.

  The corrected picture: **visible smoking is the reliable trigger, not cannabis as a subject.** Large accounts use "cannabis," "THC," and "CBD" openly without penalty, and a PhD pharmacologist sits at 512K doing exactly what we plan to do. What does not scale on TikTok is consumption-forward content — one consumption-forward creator pair sits at 8.5K there while clearing 100K+ on YouTube.

  The written policy does prohibit depicting or glorifying use, and bans at 80K, 200K, and 850K followers are documented — so the risk is real but it is narrower and more survivable than stated here originally.
</Warning>

<Warning>
  **Finding 2 — AI video must be labeled, and unlabeled AI is a four-strike path to a permanent ban.** Properly labeled AI content carries **no algorithmic penalty**. Unlabeled synthetic content runs warning → 7-day posting restriction → 30-day suspension → permanent ban. AI content is also excluded from the Creator Rewards Program, so this channel earns through traffic and app installs, not creator payouts.
</Warning>

<Note>
  **Finding 3 — quality is the whole ballgame for AI content.** Low-quality AI loses roughly **30-45% of reach** versus authentic equivalents. High-quality AI performs within a few percent of anything else. The character-consistency discipline in the [Character Config](/social/character-config) is not perfectionism; it is the difference between competing normally and starting at a 40% deficit.
</Note>

## The Compliance Lane

This is the most important operational constraint in the library, so it is worth being precise rather than nervous.

<Note>
  This table is the **conservative** reading of the written policy. Observed enforcement is looser — see the [Landscape](/social/landscape) for what large accounts actually get away with. Where the two disagree, the written policy is the risk you carry and the observed behavior is the opportunity.
</Note>

| Higher risk                                                   | Lower risk                                                   |
| ------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Depicting consumption — smoking, vaping, dabbing, lit product | Explaining what a terpene or cannabinoid does |
| Glorifying being high — "it's so fun to get blazed" | Depicting the *culture and situations* around cannabis |
| Showing product, paraphernalia, bongs, joints in frame | Talking about chemistry, labels, pricing, and the industry |
| Promoting or selling | Comedy about archetypes, dispensaries, and consumer behavior |
| Paid promotion of any ingestible or smokeable cannabis | Personified cannabinoids and terpenes as characters |

**The reframe that makes comedy work here:** the joke is never *"getting high is fun."* The joke is *"here is the absurd, specific, extremely relatable situation that surrounds being a cannabis consumer."*

That is a bigger comedic space, not a smaller one. Dispensary anxiety, budtender confidence, menu-reading, the friend who only talks about their tolerance, the person who bought by the highest number on the label — all fully permitted, all funnier than a smoking clip.

<Note>
  Researched cannabis-comedy accounts that grow successfully do exactly this: skits about dispensary visits and stoner archetypes, and **personified cannabinoids as characters**. The second one independently validates [The Entourage](/social/scripts/the-entourage) as the highest-upside format in the library.
</Note>

## Hook & Retention Data

| ---------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Initial distribution decision | \~**1.5 seconds** | Our 1.5-second rule was right. Keep it absolute. |
| Underperformers that fail in the opening | \~**90%** | The hook is not one variable among many. It is *the* variable. |
| Retention past 3s signalling wider reach | \~**70%** | Matches the "scale it" threshold in the testing framework. |
| Retention at 15s                         | \~**60%**         |                                                                    |
| Retention at 30s                         | \~**50%**         |                                                                    |
| Highest-CTR videos hooking within 3s     | **63%**           |                                                                    |
| Retention sweet spot                     | **9-15 seconds**  | Strong support for the [15s pack](/social/scripts/hook-tests-15s). |

### The Hook Type That Beats Everything

**Outcome-led hooks outperform all other categories.** Showing the result, the transformation, or the finished thing *first* — before any setup — averages the highest views per clip in the research.

This is the biggest gap in our existing hook library. Almost every hook we wrote is a *claim* or a *question*. Very few **open on the payoff**.

| We mostly wrote                                     | We are under-using                                                                              |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| "Half of all cannabis is the same terpene." (claim) | Opening on the score, the verdict, the reveal, the punchline — then explaining how we got there |
| "Can you name one terpene?" (question) | "This stash scored a 41." *then* the reason |

The second gap: **pattern interrupt** — opening on something visually or audibly unexpected. For an animated character this is cheap and we use it almost nowhere.

Both are now hook families in the [Hook Library](/social/scripts/hook-library) — `OL` and `PI`.

## Comedy Structure

The researched formula for short-form comedy that travels:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Premise, stated immediately">
    The comic idea is established in the opening beat, not built toward. No runway.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Escalation">
    Each beat is more extreme than the last. The escalating punchline — where the bit keeps tagging on further, more absurd additions — is the core viral mechanic.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Specificity">
    A specific complaint beats a general one every time. "The budtender who says 'this one's fire'" beats "budtenders give bad advice."
  </Step>

  <Step title="Payoff that reframes">
    The ending recontextualizes the premise rather than just stopping.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**Why comedy is the growth engine:** laughter is the most shareable emotion. Someone who finds a video genuinely funny sends it to a friend — and share rate is the strongest human signal in the algorithm. Data content earns saves; comedy earns shares. Shares travel further.

### The South Park Structure

The reference is apt and worth naming precisely, because South Park has a repeatable formula:

1. A mundane, recognizable setup
2. One character takes an absurd but internally consistent position
3. Escalation to a societal-scale absurdity
4. Someone states the actual point — and it lands *because* the surrounding thirty seconds were ridiculous

Beat 4 is why this format fits us better than generic comedy. **The lesson is part of the joke, not an interruption of it.** That structure lets a video be genuinely funny and still carry a real terpene fact — which is also exactly what keeps it in the permitted content lane.

## What We Got Right

Worth recording, because it means the existing library does not need rebuilding:

* **The 1.5-second rule** matches the platform's actual decision point.
* **Completion rate over views** matches how distribution is actually weighted.
* **The 15-second tier** sits inside the 9-15s retention sweet spot.
* **Character consistency discipline** turns out to be worth 30-45% of reach.
* **Personified terpenes** is an independently validated cannabis-comedy format.
* **No consumption on camera** was the correct call, for a bigger reason than we knew.
