# Video Teardowns

> Individual viral videos pulled apart — mascot campaigns and stoner meme formats — with verified metrics and what to steal from each.

## What This Page Is

The [Landscape](/social/landscape) covers *who* wins. This covers *what actually worked, video by video* — the hook, the structure, the mechanic.

<Note>
  **Metrics marked `[LIVE]` were pulled directly from TikTok's own page data** (the embedded rehydration JSON), not from press coverage. `[REPORTED]` means a published claim we could not independently confirm. Where the two disagree, both are shown.
</Note>

## Three Corrections To Widely-Repeated Numbers

Worth leading with, because these circulate as fact:

| Claim                                                              | Reality                                                                                                                                                   |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Duolingo's Barbie premiere TikTok got **25M views** | The video has **896,600 plays** `[LIVE]`. The 25M figure is cross-platform or a copied error |
| Nutter Butter's breakout video has **12.5M views** (CNN, Oct 2024) | Reads **10.1M** today `[LIVE]`. TikTok play counts get revised **down** |
| Scrub Daddy's back catalogue of viral hits | **Largely gone.** 103M lifetime likes, **133 public videos**. "The power of a comma" (21.8M), the Duolingo collabs, "damp duster" — all now return errors |

That last one is a lesson, not trivia. See [Never Delete](#never-delete-the-archive).

# Mascot Campaigns

## Duo Is Dead — the complete three-act structure

The most fully documented mascot narrative available, and the closest thing to a reusable template.

### The four mechanics worth copying

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Ship Act I with a hole in it" icon="puzzle-piece">
    **They did not know the cause of death when they announced it.** They read comments for a day, watched the audience converge on theories, and canonized the most ridiculous one. The comment section was the writers' room.
  </Card>

  <Card title="The revival goal is the product action" icon="bullseye">
    50 billion XP to resurrect Duo — which is **5.1 billion completed lessons**. Every press impression became an implicit "go open the app." Not a like. Not a follow. The thing you want them doing anyway.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Pre-emptive self-indictment" icon="hand">
    *"We're monetizing grief because we are a corporation!"* Say the cynical thing before the audience can accuse you of it.
  </Card>

  <Card title="End with a confession that becomes canon" icon="masks-theater">
    Duo revealing he faked it turned a stunt into a permanent character trait — he is now established as a narcissist who fakes deaths. Without Act III it is a gimmick.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

<Warning>
  **Two cautions.** The participation mechanic did not launch until **day 6**, and observers reported boredom before it landed — target day 2-3. And Duolingo took real criticism for using a suicide-adjacent sound in one video. **A cannabis brand doing a death or overdose-adjacent bit is in far more sensitive territory.** The Pop-Tarts register — willing, joyful, absurd sacrifice — is safer than a murder mystery.
</Warning>

### Production reality

It started as a routine app-icon refresh. Someone drew X's on Duo's eyes. Thursday: brainstorm. Friday: deck. Tuesday: live. **There was no strategic runway.** The app icon is the highest-signal asset a mobile product owns, and it is where the whole thing started.

## Duolingo On Ice — fake product launch

[April Fools 2024](https://www.tiktok.com/@duolingo/video/7352882489259511086) · `[LIVE]` **19.3M plays · 2.4M likes · 350.9K shares · 237.3K saves**

A fully-produced fake trailer for a multilingual musical on ice, Disney-style, with "buy tickets at link in bio."

**A 12.4% like rate** — the audience rewards *production commitment to a dumb idea* more than polish on a real one.

**Steal:** a fake tour, a fake collab, a fake documentary, a fake product line. Commit completely and play it straight.

## The Barbie lesson — don't judge a stunt by its view count

[Barbie premiere](https://www.tiktok.com/@duolingo/video/7256826956300242222) · `[LIVE]` **896.6K plays** — one of Duolingo's *weakest* big-moment videos.

Duo crashed the LA Barbie pink carpet in a **\$400 thrifted outfit**. Duolingo was not a partner and paid Mattel nothing. The value was never the TikTok — it was earned press and a cinema spot on 2,000+ screens.

**Steal:** the mascot's real leverage is that a costume can physically go somewhere a logo cannot, and nobody can stop you.

### Never delete the archive

**The May video outperformed the September breakout.** It posted four months *before* the virality wave and was retroactively excavated by people scrolling backwards through the feed.

Their former social lead: *"the Instagram page double\[d] in following over a week or two due to one of our very unhinged videos taking off — **months after we posted it**."*

Now compare **Scrub Daddy**: 103M lifetime likes, **133 public videos**, every historical hit returning an error. On a lore-driven account the back catalogue *is* the product.

### The catalyst was a 7,690-follower creator

[This reaction video](https://www.tiktok.com/@cassiefitzh20/video/7414167880935165227) · `[LIVE]` **3.4M plays** — posted by an account with **7,690 followers**.

*"Nutter Butter, are you guys okay?"*

A creator with under 8K followers produced the video that doubled a national brand's audience. Nutter Butter replied **in character**, which converted a callout into a collaboration.

### Aidan — the highest-ROI move in this entire document

A real person. **Aidan Maloney commented the single word "Aidan" under every Nutter Butter post for a year.** Other commenters noticed. The brand started hiding his name in ciphers, binary, and Morse code. He is now an **Associate Social Manager on the account.**

In the fiction, Aidan is a boy turned into a cookie. "Nadia" — his name backwards — is a cloud of black smoke.

<Note>
  **Elevating a real commenter into canon costs nothing and generates an entire mythology.** The anagram is deliberately easy, which is the point — it is solvable in three seconds, so thousands of people get to feel clever and post about it.

  For us the equivalents are already sitting there: the user who keeps asking about one strain, the person who logs the same thing every night, the commenter who always gives the same wrong quiz answer. Name a character after them and every other commenter starts performing for the same treatment.
</Note>

### Camouflage

Their senior social manager, on the actual goal: *"I love when we get comments that say, 'I did not realize this was the official account until I was 10 seconds into watching this video.' If we can almost **camouflage ourselves into people's For You pages**, then we can have our product be part of the story."*

## Pop-Tarts — the willing sacrifice

At the 2023 Pop-Tarts Bowl, a costumed mascot held up a sign reading **"Dreams really do come true,"** descended into a giant toaster, emerged as an actual edible Pop-Tart, and was eaten by the winning team.

`[REPORTED]` **\$12.1M earned media value and 5B+ impressions within 72 hours.** Cannes Lions Grand Prix.

**The mechanic:** the character is not a victim — it is *fulfilled*. That single beat is what made it a meme instead of a stunt.

**Steal:** one irreversible physical act, staged live, with the character consenting and delighted. It produces a **still frame that memes on its own**. Ask of any stunt: what is the single screenshot people will caption?

## Liquid Death — shares as the north star

`[REPORTED]` "Small Cans" hit 30M views and a **3:1 share-to-like ratio in the first 48 hours**. Their SVP Marketing states shares are the primary KPI, explicitly because a share means "funny enough to send to a friend."

Scrub Daddy's biggest surviving video runs a **0.78 share-to-like ratio** `[LIVE]` — nearly one share per like.

**Cannabis content has a structural advantage here.** "Send this to your smoke friend" is a built-in call to action.

## Mucinex — campaign versus account

Mucinex ran a well-funded mascot campaign with TikTok's first OTC Branded Effect and cash prizes.

**Their account today: 14,800 followers, 31 videos** `[LIVE]`.

| Brand        | Followers `[LIVE]` | Built a…     |
| ------------ | ------------------ | ------------ |
| Duolingo     | 17.3M              | account      |
| Liquid Death | 7.3M               | account      |
| Scrub Daddy  | 4.4M               | account      |
| e.l.f.       | 3.0M               | account      |
| **Mucinex**  | **14.8K**          | **campaign** |

**A mascot only compounds if it posts.** Budget for a cadence, not a campaign.

<Note>
  **Jack in the Box is the relevant-positioning, weak-execution case.** 1.8M followers, but a recent video pulled **17,900 plays** `[LIVE]` — roughly 1% reach. Worth studying anyway: they have spent a decade building the **Munchie Meal** and a late-night daypart on an unmistakable cannabis wink without ever saying the word. Steal the positioning, not the content strategy.

<Warning>
  One video was excluded as a model despite being the second-largest cannabis video verified (**35.6M views**): footage of a 9-year-old in medical distress after eating edibles, reposted by a clip-farm account. The audience rejected the framing outright — the top comment, at 710K likes, is *"this is genuinely tragic."*

  Recorded only so nobody rediscovers it and mistakes scale for a format. Nothing there is usable.
</Warning>

## The Ten Patterns

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="1. The strongest thesis in cannabis comedy" icon="trophy">
    **"The product got better and the culture got worse."** Three independent high performers mine it — potency nostalgia (1.8M), budtender myths (928K), dispensary-as-Apple-Store (260K) — and they have the richest comment sections in the dataset. This is a vein, not a video.
  </Card>

  <Card title="2. Coin a taxonomy people can claim" icon="tags">
    "Astronaut vs. space cadet" (9.0M) and named archetypes like "Kyler" turn viewers into commenters. Videos with a claimable label ran **3,900-16,900 comments**. Videos without ran **52-370**.
  </Card>

  <Card title="3. Shares and likes are different products" icon="share-nodes">
    Cheap + relational = shares (11% on a 7-second Thanksgiving meme). Dense + quotable = likes (17-19% on the stand-up clips). **Pick one and design backwards.**
  </Card>

  <Card title="4. Premise in the first sentence, always" icon="bullseye">
    **Zero of the 24 videos open with a logo, a "hey guys," or a tease.** Every hook is a naked premise: *"Welcome to me getting baked and going to IKEA for some reason."*
  </Card>

  <Card title="5. Length is not the constraint — voice is" icon="clock">
    One creator posted 206s, 230s and 302s videos to 9.0M / 4.2M / 1.4M. Meanwhile 7s, 11s, 15s and 16s videos all cleared 250K-2.5M. What predicts performance is **a joke every 10-15 seconds**, or one perfect beat.
  </Card>

  <Card title="6. Two dominant joke architectures" icon="stairs">
    **Escalation ladders** and **immovable punchlines** — fixed punchline, escalating targets. The most copy-pasteable structures available.
  </Card>

  <Card title="7. Paranoia converts into confession" icon="comments">
    The comment sections under the anxiety videos are people admitting they quit over it. **Name a private, slightly shameful cannabis feeling** and the comments run themselves.
  </Card>

  <Card title="8. Institutional framing beats being high" icon="building-columns">
    The #1 video (45.2M) is a police procedure. Others are retail and customer service. The comedy comes from **cannabis colliding with a formal system**, not from intoxication.
  </Card>

  <Card title="9. Archive arbitrage is real competition" icon="box-archive">
    Two videos in the top ten are decades-old clips (SNL 1993, Robin Williams) re-cut for a platform that never saw them. 2.8M and 2.1M.
  </Card>

  <Card title="10. Utility earns saves; jokes do not" icon="bookmark">
    The recipe videos carry the save counts. Saves are the quietest signal and the best proxy for **"this will still be working in six months."**
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

<Note>
  **Pattern 8 is the one that should change our scripts most.** [Budtender Court](/social/scripts/budtender-court) already does it — a courtroom is a formal system. So does [High IQ Test](/social/scripts/high-iq-test), which is an exam. The Comedy Engine's dispensary settings qualify too.

  What we are missing is **pattern 2** — a claimable two-word taxonomy — and **pattern 7** as comedy rather than as the straight explainer in `WRH-003`. Those are the two cheapest additions available.

# Stoner Meme Formats

Documented lineage, mostly via Know Your Meme's 29-entry cannabis culture category. Ranked by fit for an animated character.

## 1. "This Edible Ain't Shit" — the format to make our signature bit

[Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/this-edible-aint-shit) · Origin: Nov 2016, Twitter

**Structure — a two-beat reversal.** Panel 1: subject calmly says "this edible ain't shit." Panel 2: hard cut to total sensory collapse. That's the whole format.

| **2020-10-17** | **Obama edit — the TikTok pivot** | **474.6K plays / 118.4K likes in 3 weeks** |

**Why it recurs:** it is the only stoner format whose comic engine is **pharmacologically true**. Edibles metabolize into 11-hydroxy-THC, so the delay and the spike are real. Everyone who has eaten an edible has lived the two-panel structure. The meme is documentary, not exaggeration.

It has since escaped memes entirely — a 2022 released track and a 2025 animated horror short both carry the name.

<Note>
  **This should be Professor High's signature recurring format.** Three reasons: it needs exactly **two drawings** (confident pose, destroyed pose); it is infinitely re-skinnable across every strain, dose, and product type; and onset-timing education is genuinely useful information delivered as a joke.

  We already have `WRH-005` and `TWH-003` covering edible onset as straight explainers. This is the comedy version of the same fact.

## 2. "Gardening" — and why we should not use it

[Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/gardening-slang) · Origin: Nov 2023

A creator whose previous account was banned declared she would only ever call it "gardening." Vocabulary followed: *gardener*, *garden gummy*, *good morning gardeners*.

| Date           | Creator                                   | Metrics `[REPORTED]`                   |

| **2024-01-11** | **@tannervanb — the outsider confession** | **7.7M plays / 661K likes in 19 days** |

**The breakout mechanic is the important part.** The format did not go mainstream from inside the community. It broke when an **outsider** posted a confession: *"I actually feel so stupid right now… This whole time I thought she was a professional gardener and that she had an acre of land."*

**That video outperformed every in-community gardening video combined.** The code being *cracked* is more viral than the code itself.

<Warning>
  **"Gardening" is burnt.** Cann built creator campaigns on it and the videos started getting taken down — the classifier caught up. Same decay curve as every other euphemism.

  Our [compliance guidance](/social/compliance#hashtag-policy) says we do not use coded language at all: it dies on imitation, and coyness undercuts an authority brand. Clinical vocabulary achieves the same survivability legitimately.

  **But the outsider-confession mechanic transfers regardless of code.** Anything the audience has to decode — a running joke, a recurring character, an in-group reference — gets its biggest video from the person explaining it to everyone else.

## 3. "Sections of a Joint" — a timeline made spatial

[Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sections-of-a-joint) · Origin: Apr 2021, `[REPORTED]` 27K RT / 230K likes

One object segmented left to right, each segment labeled with an escalating internal state, ending in absurd paranoia.

**Why it recurs:** it renders the arc of an entire session as one static image. Zero video production. It generalized off cannabis within four days — the template outlived its subject, which marks a genuinely strong format.

**Steal:** directly portable. Segment a session, a dose, a cart. For a strain-intelligence product this is *also* a data visualization — onset curve, peak, comedown. A joke and a product feature wearing the same clothes.

## 4. "Dream Blunt Rotation" — the participation format

[Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/dream-blunt-rotation) · Earliest use 2012; TikTok video format Oct 2021 at `[REPORTED]` 467.7K plays

Pick four people you would or wouldn't smoke with. Dream = aspirational chemistry. Nightmare = maximum social friction.

**Why it recurs:** it is a **casting exercise, not a joke.** The format has no punchline of its own — it outsources the humor entirely to the poster's taste, which makes it infinitely re-runnable and makes every participant feel like the author.

This is also the clearest documented case of a stoner format with a dedicated TikTok **sound** attached.

**Steal:** our highest-participation format, and it maps onto strain data cleanly. "Dream strain rotation." "Nightmare terpene rotation." Have Professor High post his own — including a nightmare rotation naming the Entourage terpenes — and the comments fill themselves.

## 5. "*Hits Blunt*" — the character's voice, not a campaign

[Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/hits-blunt) · Origin: Sept 2014

`*hits blunt*` + a pseudo-profound question that collapses on two seconds of thought. The origin: *"Do you think sand is called sand because it's between the sea and land?"*

**Why it recurs:** it is the only stoner format that is a **writing** format rather than an image or video format. Zero production cost, infinite supply, and it flatters the audience — the joke is that the thought is dumb, but writing a good one takes wit.

**Steal:** this is a **caption and comment-reply register**, not a video series. The cheapest daily-content engine available — one sentence.

## 6. "Weed Makes You Scared" — honesty as credibility

[Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/weed-makes-you-scared-when-you-get-so-high-you-start-getting-scared) · Origin: Mar 2014, `[REPORTED]` \~461K likes accumulated over seven years

**Why it recurs:** it is the counter-narrative to "weed is chill," which makes it *honest* — and honesty about a downside reads as insider credibility rather than anti-drug messaging. Note the seven-year accumulation curve.

<Note>
  **This is where the product value actually lives.** A character that only ever depicts the good outcome is an ad. A character that acknowledges paranoia, couch-lock, and overdoing it is a *friend* — and for a strain-intelligence product, "which strain, which dose, which ratio, which outcome" is exactly the question the paranoia beat sets up.

  `WRH-003` ("I feel anxious, what did I do wrong") already does this straight. The comedy version is missing from the library.

## On Sounds

Sound-level usage counts are **not obtainable** — TikTok music and hashtag pages carry no server-rendered data. Only video pages do.

What we can verify `[LIVE]` from the video data:

| Video                                          | Audio                  |
| ---------------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Duolingo's 67.8M death announcement            | **Licensed track**     |
| Duolingo Cybertruck, eulogy, On Ice | **Original sound** |
| **All five of Nutter Butter's biggest videos** | **Original sound** |
| Scrub Daddy's 2.8M hit                         | Licensed library track |

**The pattern: licensed or trending audio for the moment you want reach; original sound for content that builds lore.** Nutter Butter is five-for-five on original sound across its biggest videos — because original sound makes an account's audio identity ownable and un-copyable.

<Note>
  Our [production spec](/social/scripts/production-spec#audio) already assigns each show a recurring stinger — gavel for Court, stamp thud for Receipts, candle-flicker for Lab Logs. That is the right instinct. The upgrade is commissioning **one original sound** carrying a line Professor High says, so the format can recur without us posting it.
