If High IQ feels slow, crashes unexpectedly, or uses excessive battery or memory, this guide covers the most common causes and how to resolve them.

Common Causes

Symptoms: Screens take a long time to load, scrolling is choppy, or tapping buttons has a noticeable delay.Solution:
1

Update the app

Performance improvements are included in most updates. Open the App Store, search for “High IQ,” and install the latest version.
2

Restart the app

Force-close High IQ from the app switcher and reopen it. This clears temporary memory and resets internal caches.
3

Free up device memory

Close other apps running in the background. If your device has many apps open simultaneously, iOS may throttle performance.
4

Restart your device

A full device restart clears system-level memory pressure that can slow down all apps.
The Strain Discovery screen loads thousands of strains with real-time search and filtering. If this screen feels slow, it typically improves after the initial data load is cached.
Symptoms: The app closes unexpectedly, returns to the home screen, or shows a white screen before closing.Solution:
1

Update to the latest version

Most crashes are caused by bugs that have already been fixed. Check the App Store for updates.
2

Check iOS version

High IQ requires iOS 16 or later. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and update if your version is below 16.
3

Free up storage space

If your device has less than 1 GB of free storage, apps may crash due to insufficient space for temporary files. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to check.
4

Reinstall the app

Delete High IQ and reinstall it from the App Store. This removes any corrupted local data. Your account data is stored in the cloud and will sync back after you sign in.
If the app crashes immediately on launch every time, reinstalling is usually the most effective fix. Your stash, sessions, favorites, and reports are all stored in the cloud and will not be lost.
Symptoms: You notice High IQ appearing near the top of your battery usage list in Settings > Battery.Solution:
1

Check screen time

Battery usage often correlates with how long the app was on screen. If you used High IQ for an hour, it is normal for it to use a proportional amount of battery.
2

Check background activity

Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and check if High IQ is enabled. For real-time sync to work efficiently, background refresh should be on, but you can disable it to save battery if you only need sync when the app is open.
3

Disable location services if unused

If you enabled location access for dispensary features but do not use them, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > High IQ and set it to Never.
Symptoms: Typing in the strain search bar has a long delay before results appear, or the search spinner runs for more than a few seconds.Solution:
1

Check your connection

Strain search queries the API server. A slow or unstable connection will make search feel sluggish.
2

Be more specific

Searching for single letters or very common terms (like “og”) returns many results and takes longer. Adding more characters narrows the search and speeds up results.
3

Wait for initial load

The first search after opening the app may be slower while the connection warms up. Subsequent searches are faster.
Symptoms: AI-generated reports appear stuck on “Generating…” or take more than 60 seconds to complete.Solution:
1

Keep the app in the foreground

Report generation uses real-time streaming (Server-Sent Events). If you switch to another app while a report is generating, the stream may pause. Keep High IQ open until the report completes.
2

Check your connection

Streaming reports require a stable connection. If you are on a flaky Wi-Fi network, try switching to cellular data.
3

Retry if stuck

If a report has been stuck for more than 2 minutes, go back and regenerate it. Occasional server timeouts can cause a stream to stall.
Reports are generated section by section with a visible progress indicator. It is normal for some sections (especially the AI analysis sections) to take 10-20 seconds each.
Symptoms: High IQ appears to use more storage than expected in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.Solution:
1

Check cached images

High IQ caches strain images locally for faster loading. This cache grows as you browse more strains. Reinstalling the app clears this cache.
2

Reinstall to reset cache

If the app is using an unreasonable amount of storage (500 MB+), delete and reinstall it. Your data is stored in the cloud, so nothing will be lost. The cache will rebuild gradually as you use the app.
