Mystery shopper format. Visit five dispensaries. Ask the same question - “I want something for focus” or “What’s good for sleep?” Compare the answers. Score each budtender’s response on the High IQ scale. Generate rankings, leaderboards, and entire neighborhoods of “smart vs not.”

Concept

The Budtender Test is the most watchable longform format in the bible. The setup is simple. Pick a question. Visit five dispensaries on the same day. Ask the same question at every counter. Record (with consent and disclosure) the response. Score the answers using the same High IQ framework that powers IQ Check, with terpene-level reasoning and High Family awareness as the rubric. The result is a real comparative test of an opaque industry. Some budtenders nail it. Some confidently make things up. Some recite indica-vs-sativa myths the show has already busted. The audience watches the answers stack up against each other and ends up with a clear ranking - and a clear sense of which shops are run by people who actually know the product. The format scales. It can be repeated by city, by chain, by question type, by season. Over time it generates a leaderboard. It has the bones of a regional content series with potential local-press pickup in every market we visit. It is also the show most likely to get dispensaries to actually train their staff better, which is the long-term win.

Why It Works

Built-in suspense

Five answers stacked against each other. The audience scores along with us. The format has a winner and losers, which is everything for retention.

Industry accountability

No one else is willing to do this. Brand-funded creators cannot. Dispensaries cannot. We can, because we are funded by the user, not the industry.

Endlessly repeatable

Five questions times every city we visit equals years of content. The leaderboard compounds. The audience asks for their city next.

Platforms

PlatformRole
YouTubePrimary. 8-12 minute episodes. The format needs runtime to breathe.
TikTokClipped highlights. One per visit. Plus the final ranking as a standalone.
InstagramCarousel of the leaderboard. Stories for “guess the winner” polls.

Cadence

Monthly. The format is filming-intensive and the answers need to be fairly compared, which means every test happens on the same day per question.

Example Episodes

Budtender Test #001: “I want something for focus” - testing five LA dispensaries. The pilot. The most popular cannabis user request. Establishes the rubric, the visual language, and the scoring system. Budtender Test #002: “What’s good for sleep?” - testing five NYC dispensaries. Bicoastal version. Tests whether the East Coast staff training is meaningfully different from the West Coast. (Spoiler: it varies more by chain than by region.) Budtender Test #003: testing the same chain across three different cities. Same chain. Same question. Three markets. Reveals whether national chains have consistent staff training or whether every shop is its own world. Budtender Test #004: “I’m a beginner, what should I try?” - the most important test. The highest-stakes question, because the answer shapes whether the customer ever comes back to cannabis at all. The episode the industry most needs to watch. Budtender Test #005: ranking every dispensary I visited this year. The annual leaderboard. End-of-year compilation. Names the best and worst across every market. Designed to be press-pickup bait.

Production Notes

Ethical mystery shopping. We disclose to the dispensary after the fact, before publishing, and we offer a follow-up segment if a budtender wants to respond on camera. No hidden cameras - we shoot openly and let the staff opt in. Score graphics for each budtender use the same High IQ visual system as IQ Check. Map graphic at the top of every episode shows the route of the day. Final ranking screen is designed to be screenshotted.
